This leaflet summarises the joint DfES / DfT publication for schools which: shows how schools with a school travel plan can get new capital funding; suggests practical ideas for encouraging pupils to walk, cycle or use public transport to travel to school; how local authorities can help by introducing speed bumps, road crossings and cycle ways.
The past 20 years have seen the proportion of cars on the school run almost double. This project is attempting to work with schools to alleviate the problems associated with increased traffic around schools. Action includes: consulting pupils/parents and wider community on travel habits to see how walking/cycling could be encouraged; putting a travel plan in place to show how schools will achieve changes; providing a network of school travel advisers in each LEA; making additional capital grants available.
