This pack provides guidance to schools on ways to raise standards in their work with pupils learning English as an additional language. It is designed to support both class teachers and additional staff funded through the Ethnic Minority Achievement Grant (EMAG).
The pack is also useful for consultants and line managers responsible for setting strategy. In particular, it provides them with background information which helps put the issue into a wider strategic context.
The material offers teachers six training modules, which use a range of real-life examples. They cover literacy, whole-class teaching, getting best use of other adults, targeted group work, and the needs of isolated pupils.
The focus in all the modules is on showing how the progress of such pupils can improve by the effective use of targets and by making inclusion a part of all school activity and thinking. The material also includes practical tips and advice on working with other organisations to get full use of resources. The material can be used during Literacy Hour.
The ring binder includes a video, case studies, teaching materials and references to further reading. It was updated in July 2002 to reflect developments since the first guidance notes were published by the National Literacy Strategy in 1999.
