After explaining the details of the new ethnic background categories, the introduction to this guide sets out important deadlines and explains the benefits of updating data collection in this area.
Each step of the change process is explained in its own section covering the relationship between existing local ethnic background breakdowns and the new categories. Advice on the level of detail needed in ethnic monitoring, ascription of ethnic categories to pupils, software and contact information is also outlined.
The guide gives clear advice on seeking information from parents. This includes an explanation of how the data will be used, guidance on what action should be taken when parents are reluctant to supply data, and clarification on parents’ and pupils’ rights in this area.
Two annexes at the end of the guide give samples of documents that facilitate data collection, including a copy of the ethnic background record form and model letters to parents about collection and recording of pupils’ ethnic background data.
