Pupils, teachers and school leaders have all told the DfES that they needed practical guidance to help them make decisions to become more sustainable in their activity. With that in mind, the DfES have developed ‘A Bursar’s guide to sustainable school operation’. This booklet has straightforward ideas on how schools can become more sustainable and actually save money.
From thinking about lighting to changing the way schools purchase computers; from the short term to the long term, the guide is full of ideas. In June, the DfES are also launching a pupils’ Carbon Detectives’ Kit – an online project where Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils can measure their school’s carbon footprint.
Working with pupils can help them feel part of the school’s decision making. The guide also ties in with the S3 evaluation tool designed to help schools integrate sustainability into their overall plans.
This guide is supported by two complementary publications: Top Tips to reduce energy and water use in schools (DFES-00369-2007), and Top Tips to reduce waste in schools (DFES-00368-2007), which are both available to download or order from this site.
