It is intended to be a reference document for school improvement partners, head teachers, governors - particularly chairs of governors - and others interested in understanding the role.

The roll-out of the school improvement partner function is now complete at secondary level, and local authorities have agreed to introduce primary school improvement partners in one of four waves, from January 2007 to April 2008.
